Pierre Alechinsky

The Belgian artist is born 1927 in Brüssels and is the Son is of Russian-Jewish immigrants. In 1944 he joint the architecture and visual arts school „La Cambre“ and in 1949 he took part of the Cobra group and was co-responsible for the Cobra magazine. In 1951 he moved to paris and studied engraving at Atelier 17 under Stanley William Hayter. In the mid-50s he got interested in oriental calligraphy and travel to Japan where made a documentary about the traditional calligraphy of the country. 1983 till 1987 he worked as Professor of painting at the ENSBA (National School of Fine Arts in Paris). He lives and works since 1963 in Bougival near Paris.
