CoBrA artist: Corneille

Corneille (Corneille Guillaume Beverloo) was born 1922 in Liege (Belgium). his parents were dutch and he returned 1934 to the Netherlands. 1940-1943 he studied at the Academy of Art in Amsterdam. In 1948 he founded together with Karel Appel and Constant the Netherlands Experimental Group and the magazine Reflex. In the same year he cofounded the artist group CoBrA. He traveled to Africa, Latin America, Mexico, Brazil, Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Bali, China, Japan, Israel, USA, Italy, Hungary and Denmark. He saw traveling as an opportunity to find new inspiration and he had many different artistic styles in his life. He started when he young with portraits and then during the CoBrA time he was painting very imaginative, strange and colorful characters. after CoBrA he was painting very abstract, many speak of abstract landscapes and since about 1970 he was paintig mainly women, birds and snakes. Since 1950 Corneille lived and worked until his death in Paris. He also made sculptors, poets, etchings and pottery. Corneille died 2010 in Auvers-sur-Oise (a place 35km from Paris)
