Toyen, actually Marie Čermínová (September 21, 1902 Prague, Czech Republic – November 9, 1980 Paris, France) was a surrealist painter, draftsman and graphic artist, representative of Poetry.
Marie Čermínová first studied in her hometown at the Academy of Fine Arts before moving to Paris, where she joined the circle around André Breton.
During the Second World War, she had to submerge because her paintings were regarded as degenerate by the Nazis.
She is considered the most important Czech painter of the 20th century.
From 1947 she lived in Paris. untill her death in 1980 at the age of 78.
