Georges Mathieu

Georges Mathieu (January 27, 1921 Boulogne-sur-Mer – 10th June 2012 Boulogne-Billancourt) was an abstract painter. He was considered as one of the main representatives of Tachism.

Mathieus’ paintings are mostly non-representational compositions determined by the rapidity of the painting process. The origin of his paintings is based on the method of Japanese calligraphy, which can be characterized by meditation, concentration, improvisation and speed.
Mathieu painted large pictures infront of the an audience. The production process of the work of art is therefore of great importance. He often made his works in a few minutes. He was convinced that he could only express his innermost innocence in such a way.

He did not change his style after the first successful sale of one of his paintings.
